Given the evolving situation regarding COVID-19, for the safety of our staff and volunteers, HIAS has suspended all in-person client meetings and all non-essential travel, including pro bono legal delegations to the border. We are however still actively recruiting pro bono attorneys to help asylum seekers remotely. We encourage all interested attorneys to complete the Pro Bono Application and attend an orientation with our Pro Bono team to learn more.
HIAS works with a generous network of pro bono attorneys — both locally through our headquarters in NYC and Silver Spring, MD, and across the country — to provide legal services to refugees, asylum seekers, asylees, and others who are seeking humanitarian relief.
HIAS engages pro bono attorneys to help with applications to USCIS, including adjustments of status and temporary protected status, short term projects such as country conditions research, and direct representation of clients who are seeking asylum. We work with pro bono attorneys to support asylum seekers from all over the country, including at the U.S.-Mexico border, in New York City, and in the greater Washington, DC area. Much of our programming is designed to be completed remotely, so we can work with pro bono attorneys who are located anywhere within the U.S.!
Pro bono attorneys receive ongoing support from HIAS through hands-on mentoring and access to a library of resources. We pair pro bono attorneys with HIAS attorney mentors who are available throughout the project to answer questions, troubleshoot legal issues, and/or review drafts. HIAS provides pro bono attorneys with access to substantive legal trainings, detailed toolkits, and sample filings to support their work with HIAS. We also regularly hold live training opportunities and CLEs for attorneys interested in further developing their knowledge about emerging issues in asylum, refugee, and immigration law. As part of our effort to provide wraparound services, HIAS also provides pro bono attorneys with connections to its wide network of social services partners so that their clients can benefit from other vital resources while their cases are pending.
We are actively recruiting new Pro Bono Attorneys! If you are interested in participating in any of HIAS’ pro bono work, please fill out this form.
