Addressing Lies and Conspiracies about HIAS, Migration, and the Great Replacement Theory

The Great Replacement Theory is an entirely false conspiracy theory embraced by white nationalists. It revolves around a plot to replace white European populations with non-white populations through immigration, birth rates, and increased political power. Proponents of the theory often (but not always) accuse Jews and Jewish organizations of orchestrating the influx of immigrants in order to shape electoral politics and “replace” the citizenry. This reflects long-standing antisemitic tropes about Jewish control and influence.
Those who promote the Great Replacement Theory often attack HIAS, depicting our efforts to aid those legally seeking asylum in the U.S. and resettle refugees as an “invasion” at the border. It was the primary motivation of the shooter in the Pittsburgh synagogue attack in 2018. In recent months, white nationalist activists and influencers have been knowingly sharing misinformation about HIAS in hopes of furthering their own xenophobic, antisemitic and/or racist agendas — as well as to drive profits by maximizing and monetizing outrage.
It is time to set the record straight regarding some of these hateful and dangerous claims. Here are four essential facts about HIAS’ work.
Fact 1: HIAS does not encourage illegal immigration.
HIAS supports legal pathways to safety for refugees and asylum seekers. We work within the framework of international and domestic laws to ensure that individuals seeking refuge are treated fairly and humanely. HIAS provides legal assistance, resettlement services, and other forms of support to help individuals navigate the complex immigration system legally.
Fact 2: HIAS does not use immigrants to get candidates elected.
HIAS is a humanitarian organization providing aid and support to refugees and asylum seekers. We are nonpartisan and do not favor or oppose any candidate for public office — nor would we ever urge any person to illegally vote in an election.
Fact 3: HIAS is not secretly working with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to encourage open borders.
Secretary Mayorkas previously served on the HIAS board of directors, resigning in December 2020, within a week of being nominated by President Biden to serve as the secretary of homeland security. HIAS does not receive funding from the Department of Homeland Security.
Fact 4: HIAS does not have a hidden agenda to influence demographic changes that displace anyone.
HIAS’s agenda is to support to society’s most vulnerable individuals. We strive to protect the rights and improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers, driven by the core Jewish value of “welcoming the stranger.” HIAS operates transparently and is guided by a mission to ensure that those fleeing persecution and violence can find safety and rebuild their lives.
HIAS is dedicated to protecting and assisting refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. Misinformation campaigns attempt to misdirect the public and obscure the important work undertaken by HIAS and other organizations serving vulnerable communities. By dispelling these myths, we hope to foster a better understanding of our organization’s mission and operations.
