Costa Rica currently hosts more than 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority from Nicaragua and Venezuela. Others have fled from countries such as El Salvador, Colombia, and Honduras.

Yoerli’s life changed in early 2021 when she suddenly had to flee to Costa Rica. The HIAS legal team in Costa Rica then helped Yoerli win her asylum case and gain a refugee permit, and now she works for HIAS to help other refugees rebuild their lives.
“Speaking about refugees and migrants isn’t just about numbers. It’s about people, mothers, children, who have faces, names, and stories to tell,” Yoerli said. “It feels really great to see how people’s lives change for the better thanks to the help they receive from HIAS.”
