HIAS Welcomes Federal Judge’s Ruling on SB 4 Bill

SILVER SPRING, Md.—On Tuesday, August 30, a federal judge in Texas issued a ruling blocking the implementation of the SB 4 immigration bill. In response, HIAS Vice President for Public Affairs Melanie Nezer issued the following statement:

“The courts have stepped in to stop legislation that would have caused real harm to refugees and immigrants in Texas. SB 4 would have directed local law enforcement officials to target individuals simply because of how they speak or the color of their skin, which runs contrary to the rights guaranteed by the constitution. HIAS stands with the people and communities in Texas who are offering hospitality to newcomers, as we work to build a more welcoming country together.”
