As Congress continues its work ahead of the November 17th deadline to prevent a partial shutdown of the federal government, HIAS is sounding the alarm about anti-asylum proposals that would be damaging not only for the people seeking safety, but also for communities around the United States, and for the nation’s historic leadership role when it comes to welcoming refugees.

HIAS is relieved that Congress averted a shutdown of the federal government with the passage of a short-term funding bill Saturday night. At the same time, the organization continues to call on lawmakers to protect humanitarian assistance, and urges them not to compromise the rights of refugees or asylum seekers as they work to reach agreement on a final funding package.
