HIAS Statement on Conviction of Derek Chauvin
Apr 20, 2021
WASHINGTON — Today, a jury in Minneapolis found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd.
HIAS welcomes the news that George Floyd’s killer will be held accountable. At the same time, we recognize today’s verdict is a limited form of justice. We must work tirelessly to end all extrajudicial violence by police and make our country safe and fair for every one of its citizens. We must also work to redress centuries of abuse against Black Americans and other people of color.
“The murder of George Floyd was a grave and terrible injustice. We at HIAS pray our society can heal not just from his murder, but from more than 400 years of racial injustice,” said HIAS President and CEO Mark Hetfield. “HIAS works for an inclusive America that is a haven for those fleeing danger and persecution abroad, but there is still so much work to do right here at home. Today's verdict renews both our hope and our commitment to work for justice.”
HIAS stands in solidarity with the family of George Floyd, the Black community, and all those wishing and working for a more just America.
