Forgotten Crises: Displacement in Latin America

Throughout Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), millions of people experience displacement, including millions of Venezuelans, contributing to a large humanitarian crisis within the region. However, the emergence of other, more high-profile challenges around the world has caused media and donor attention to drift elsewhere — yet the repercussions of this displacement have not gone away. Over 500,000 refugees and migrants braved the dangerous Darien Gap in 2023. 

This fact sheet provides a snapshot of this “forgotten crisis” and details HIAS’ response, which includes the provision of protection and services to more than a quarter million people in 2023.
