General Events

Anti-immigrant rhetoric is being used as a tool to affect the outcome of elections around the world, including in the United States. It is a painful repetition of history, particularly on the 100th anniversary of the Johnson-Reed Act of 1924. Then and now, politicians and media used misinformation and scapegoating both to respond to and perpetuate the anti-immigrant and antisemitic sentiments of their day.

Now more than ever, we must remember the lessons of our past to disrupt current trends leading us back towards some of our nation’s darkest chapters. Join us for a panel that will unpack these trends, hold up a mirror to our own Jewish history, and call us to action today.

Featured Speakers Include:

  • Mark Hetfield, CEO and President, HIAS
  • Hasia R. Diner, Professor Emerita, Director of the Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History, New York University
  • Moderated by Annie Polland, President, Tenement Museum

This program is the first in a three-part series focusing on immigration policy and history in the lead up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
