HIAS Applauds House Passage of the American Dream and Promise Act

Silver Spring, Md.–Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives made history when it passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, with a vote of 237-187.

H.R 6 sets forth a path for citizenship for more than 2 million Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Action Departure (DED) recipients. This vote marks the first time in a decade that either Congressional chamber passed a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for the long-term undocumented.

Melanie Nezer, HIAS’ Senior Vice President of Public Affairs said, “We at HIAS are thrilled that the House passed The American Dream and Promise Act today. This legislation finally recognizes the need for our fellow community members, many of whom have called this country home for decades, to find security through citizenship and freedom from the threat of deportation. With today’s vote, the House of Representatives represented the will of the vast majority of Americans. Seventy seven percent of voters, from both parties, support citizenship for Dreamers.”

Nezer also said, “Our elected officials in the House answered the call to restore stability to the lives of thousands of our neighbors. Now we turn to the Senate and urge our Senators to demonstrate similar leadership and swiftly pass the American Dream and Promise Act.”
