Congress Provides Crucial Funding for Afghan Refugees

SILVER SPRING, Md. — HIAS appreciates Congress’ work to pass legislation to fund the federal government through February 18, 2022. The legislation includes much needed supplemental funding for the U.S. refugee program to welcome Afghans.

“Thanks to this legislation Afghan refugees will have a better chance of starting their lives in the U.S. with a real sense of stability and opportunity,” said Elizabeth Mandelman, HIAS’ senior director of policy and advocacy. “This funding is truly essential for thousands of people who have come to this country for a better life.”

HIAS particularly commends Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) for championing the effort to welcome displaced Afghans and refugees from all over the world, and for ensuring that communities and states have the proper resources to successfully welcome them.

Mandelman added that Congress must also pass the Afghan Adjustment Act, which would strengthen communities hosting refugees and ensure Afghans have the chance to apply to become lawful permanent residents.
