The Benefits and Pitfalls of Temporary Immigrant Relief

With Congress continuing to fail to pass comprehensive immigration reform, the Biden administration has largely been turning to alternative solutions to help get vulnerable people protection within the United States. As a result, they have embraced “humanitarian parole” and relied heavily on Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

While these are valuable legal pathways that have created lifesaving opportunities for some, they exclude many others. And even for those who have benefitted from these policies the help is only temporary, as after individuals arrive in the U.S. they must still apply for — and be granted — a permanent immigration status to meaningfully rebuild their lives here.
