HIAS Joins "Stop Hate for Profit" Campaign

SILVER SPRING, Md. — HIAS is joining the #StopHateforProfit campaign, which is calling on businesses and organizations to stop advertising on Facebook for the month of July 2020. The campaign, organized by civil rights organizations including the Anti-Defamation League and the NAACP, is a response to Facebook’s allowing racist, violent, and false content to run on its platform.

“When we fail to block hate online, we allow for the unchecked and unchallenged spread of bigotry and prejudice into our communities, and we’ve already seen the terrible repercussions,” said Melanie Nezer, HIAS’ senior vice president for public affairs. “HIAS joins people of all faiths, races, and backgrounds who together are taking meaningful action to stop hate. All of us should be able to live our lives without fear of violence, in safety and in peace.”

Stop Hate for Profit aims to organize corporate and public pressure to urge Facebook, which makes $70 billion a year in revenue, to provide support to targets of hate, increase safety for groups on the platform, and stop generating ad revenue from harmful content.
