HIAS Statement on the Election of Donald Trump

SILVER SPRING, MD — As the 2024 U.S. election results become clear, we at HIAS reaffirm our unwavering commitment to welcome, protect and advocate for refugees, asylum seekers and displaced people around the world.

For more than 120 years, HIAS has advocated to the United States government — regardless of political party — to uphold the legacy of a country that is a beacon of hope for refugees seeking safety and that values the contributions of immigrants. “We know that the road before us is long and fraught, but we remain undeterred in our commitment to standing for welcome, and against the politics of fear, dehumanization, and demonization. We will continue to speak truth to power in solidarity with refugees and displaced people seeking safety around the world,” said HIAS President Mark Hetfield. “In partnership with the Jewish community and other communities of faith, we will do all we can to fulfill the biblical commandment, and the American tradition, of welcoming the stranger.”

Words matter, and HIAS knows how dangerous words have been in this campaign season. “The effects of the demonizing rhetoric may now unfold,” said Hetfield. “If the mass deportation articulated throughout the campaign season is implemented, it would tear families, communities, and the American economy apart. The solution to the disorder at the border is to prioritize comprehensive immigration reform that updates our antiquated immigration laws while protecting people who need refuge.”

Hetfield concluded, “With more displaced persons now than at any time in history, we urge the Trump Administration to demonstrate U.S. leadership by maintaining the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program as a safe and orderly way to protect refugees.”

In this dark moment, HIAS reaffirms our commitment to stand in solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities around the country, with Jewish communities, and with all marginalized populations who may now be in danger. We will not be intimidated into silence or inaction. We will fight every day for people seeking refuge.
