The Harm of Removing Immigrants to Third Countries

Since taking office in January, President Trump has sought to remove individuals deported from the United States to third countries, including those accused of prevalent human rights abuses, in contravention of the law.

HIAS, along with five other international and immigrant human rights organizations, submitted a comment to the UN Special Rapporteur on Migrant Rights examining these unlawful attempts. The comment details the U.S.’ evasive and overnight efforts to remove individuals to El Salvador, Libya, and South Sudan without sufficient notice or a realistic opportunity to contest their removals. It also reveals how, with little regard for the rule of law or court orders, the administration continues to sacrifice the safety and due process of individuals — many seeking humanitarian protection in the U.S. — for expediency and political gain.
