Why Refugees Need Our Support

Imagine being forced to flee your home with no certainty of where you'll go, whether you'll be welcomed, or what will come next. This is the reality facing millions of refugees and immigrants around the world.

Today, more than 117 million people have been forced from their homes because of violence, persecution, and conflict. Behind every number is a person seeking safety, a family searching for stability, and a future at risk. Yet as displacement reaches record levels, governments around the world are closing doors, cutting aid, and restricting access to asylum, leaving millions without the protection and support they need to rebuild their lives.

At HIAS, we believe that seeking safety is a human right and that every person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, freedom, and hope. When refugees and immigrants have access to safety, legal support, and economic opportunities, they can rebuild their lives and contribute to the communities around them.

We believe that a more just and compassionate world is possible. When we see xenophobia toward the refugee and immigrant communities we serve, we respond with leadership and vision. We show up in refugee camps, in courtrooms, and in the streets. We show up when governments cut lifesaving aid and legal protections. We show up because it’s the right thing to do, because we are commanded to welcome the stranger, and because we won’t turn away from those in need.

Our teams make sure that refugees have a helping hand in the hardest moments of their journey. We provide legal services and protection, mental health care, economic assistance, and humanitarian aid that help people recover, rebuild, and thrive. With Jewish communities beside us, we advocate for policies that protect the rights of all displaced people.

We envision a world where people forced to flee can create brighter futures for themselves and their families. With your support, we can help make that vision a reality. Join us.

What the Latest Displacement Data from UNHCR Reveals

On World Refugee Day every year, UNHCR compiles and releases key data on global displacement, including the number of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs), the number of people returning home, and the number of newly displaced people. Accordingly, World Refugee Day can also be considered a report card on the progress the international community is making – or not – to address issues facing refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people.

Read our breakdown of the three most important takeaways from the latest data on the global displacement crisis.
