HIAS Video Conference: Reflecting on 2017, Rallying for 2018

By Gabe Cahn, HIAS.org

In one of his first acts as President Donald Trump announced a ban on refugee arrivals seeking to slam America’s doors to global victims of violence and persecution. One year later, on January 25, 2018, HIAS President and CEO Mark Hetfield and Senior Vice President for Public Affairs Melanie Nezer held a video conference to reflect on the the past year, and to plan for the year ahead.

They provided up-to-the-minute reports on the status of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, the challenges to the Muslim and refugee bans, and the outlook for the global refugee crisis in 2018.

Additionally, Hetfield and Nezer answered several questions on topics ranging from security vetting to DACA, and HIAS Director of Campaigns Rebecca Kirzner laid out several ways in which individuals and congregations can take action to support refugees.
