LISTEN: HIAS December Briefing Call
Dec 06, 2016
HIAS held a briefing call for supporters on Tuesday, December 6. You can listen to a full recording of the call by pressing play below.
On the call, HIAS President and CEO Mark Hetfield noted the prominence of the refugee issue throughout the presidential campaign, and the “big changes” to both policy and the environment of welcome in the United States as we prepare for a Trump administration. Hetfield also highlighted incoming UN Secretary General António Guterres, and the positive role he could play with the proper support of the international community
Vice President for Policy and Advocacy Melanie Nezer laid out the challenges and opportunities ahead, including a call to increase grassroots activism and engagement with the existing champions for refugees on both sides of the aisle.
Participants also heard from Rabbi Jennie Rosenn, HIAS’ vice president for community engagement, who briefed participants on several actions that can be taken right now to make sure their voices continue to be heard. Specifically, Rosenn described the many ways local communities are actively working to make refugees in this country feel welcome, such as the HIAS welcome note, which has already garnered thousands of signatures and will be delivered to clients in the new year.
