HIAS Condemns Attack in Germany

SILVER SPRING, Md. – HIAS condemns the attempted attack on a German synagogue yesterday and offers condolences to the families of two persons killed in related shootings. German prosecutors believe the attacker had planned to carry out a massacre on Judaism’s holiest day, and HIAS stands with the Halle and German Jewish community.

“The specter of anti-Semitism can reveal itself anywhere in the world, and the deadly attack that took place on Yom Kippur is a tragic reminder that anti-Semitism persists in Europe,” said Ilan Cohn, Director of HIAS Europe. “We all have a responsibility to counter anti-Semitism, racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia with messages of respect, tolerance, and inclusion. Now is the time to stand together against hate.”
