HIAS Welcomes Summit of the Americas Declaration on Migration and Protection

SILVER SPRING, Md. – HIAS welcomes the adoption of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection at the Ninth Summit of the Americas by leaders from 20 countries across the Western Hemisphere.
We look forward to seeing a roadmap on implementation from the assembled heads of state and government, who have pledged to work together to improve political, economic and environmental conditions so fewer people are displaced throughout the Latin American and Caribbean region. Their stated objectives also include safeguarding access to asylum and making migration safer and more orderly overall, by expanding legal pathways for those who have been forced to flee violence, human rights abuses, and climate change.
As an active member of the humanitarian community in Latin America and the Caribbean, HIAS is proud to support countries in the region that have a long tradition of helping refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people – particularly the most vulnerable, including women and children at risk of trafficking and gender-based violence, and LGBTQ individuals facing discrimination.
HIAS welcomes the Biden administration’s commitments to make the asylum process at the U.S.-Mexico border more humane, fair, and efficient, and to resettle 20,000 refugees from the Americas over the next two fiscal years – a threefold increase from this year that will include an increase in the resettlement of Haitian refugees.
Across the region, we will continue to advocate for financing and assistance from governments and United Nations agencies, both to protect those in transit, and to make it possible for more people to remain in, or return to, their countries of origin to live safer and more dignified lives in economically stable and environmentally sustainable circumstances. HIAS also supports all efforts to help those who are forcibly displaced gain access to legal protection and documents, along with jobs and public services, so they can be better integrated into their host communities as they rebuild their lives.

HIAS Aplaude la Adopción de la Declaración Sobre Migración y Protección
SILVER SPRING, Md. — HIAS aplaude la adopción de la Declaración de Los Ángeles sobre Migración y Protección, como parte de la Novena Cumbre de las Américas por líderes de 20 países en el hemisferio occidental.
HIAS seguirá atentamente la evolución del plan de implementación anunciado por los jefes de Estado y gobierno, quienes han prometido mejorar las condiciones políticas, económicas y ambientales para lograr que menos personas en América Latina y el Caribe sean víctimas de desplazamiento forzado. Los objetivos fijados incluyen garantizar el acceso al asilo y hacer la migración más segura y ordenada, ofreciendo apoyo e información sobre opciones legales para quienes han sido forzados a huir de la violencia, violaciones de derechos humanos y cambio climático.
Como miembro activo de la comunidad humanitaria en América Latina y el Caribe, HIAS se enorgullece y se compromete a seguir apoyando los esfuerzos de los países para atender a la población refugiada y migrante — particularmente la más vulnerable, incluyendo mujeres y niñas en riesgo de trata y violencia de género, y las personas LGBTIQ+ que sufren discriminación.
HIAS celebra el compromiso de la administración Biden en hacer el proceso de asilo en la frontera EEUU-México más humano, justo y eficiente, y reubicar 20,000 personas refugiadas de América Latina y el Caribe en los próximos dos años — triplicando el número asignado este año, y que incluirá un aumento en la reubicación de personas haitianas.
Continuaremos apoyando los esfuerzos de los gobiernos y agencias de Naciones Unidas y abogando por el aumento de fondos para proteger a las personas en tránsito y por hacer posible que más gente pueda permanecer o regresar a sus países de origen para vivir vidas más seguras y dignas, en circunstancias económicamente estables y ambientalmente sostenibles. HIAS también apoya los esfuerzos para ayudar a las personas desplazadas a tener acceso a protección legal, así como a empleo y servicios públicos, de manera que puedan integrarse mejor a sus comunidades de acogida mientras reconstruyen sus vidas.
