Emergency Appeal: Sudanese refugees in Chad need your help!
The Sudanese government and Janjaweed militias are attacking villages across the Darfur region in a coordinated fashion using air and ground forces, forcing almost two million people to flee their homes. Villages are burned and the people are shot or beaten. Many of the women are raped and the men and boys are killed or disappear. Communities are destroyed and families torn apart.
The conflict in the vast desert region in western Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people and driven two million into refugee camps in Darfur and neighboring Chad. The violence has left them terrified and exhausted. They are completely dependent on those willing to help them.
The refugees have nightmares and worry for their family and friends who disappeared in Darfur. The children, who are too young to understand, ask questions about what happened and why they are in the refugee camps. Even the adults struggle to understand the situation and question how they will rebuild their lives.
HIAS, in partnership with IsraAID, the Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, is responding with a program in four refugee camps, with a fifth a possibility in 2007, in Chad to strengthen the refugees' psychological and social conditions, and help them develop coping skills in the aftermath of their violent displacement. Through counseling and community building services, the HIAS/IsraAID program will help the refugees regain control of their lives.
As Jews, it is our historic and moral imperative to help the victims of this genocide. Help Sudanese refugees in Chad today!
