HIAS Washington DC Office
HIAS’ Washington DC office plays a crucial role in implementing the agency’s refugee and immigrant protection agenda.  This work involves advocacy in the immigrant and refugee policy arena before the Congress, the Executive Branch, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

A primary function of the HIAS Washington DC office is to educate, and advocate HIAS’ positions to Washington policy makers.  HIAS DC also participates actively in coalitions concerned with immigration and refugee affairs and related concerns to develop and implement advocacy strategies to promote our goals.

Intern Position
An intern in the HIAS DC office will be involved in our efforts to advocate for generous and just immigration policies in Congress and the Administration.  Responsibilities include:  researching issues relating to immigration, refugees, and asylum seekers; helping plan and implement events for HIAS Young Leaders; monitoring and reporting on Congressional hearings, legislative affairs, and news stories of concern to HIAS; and performing administrative tasks. 

Qualifications:  A successful candidate will have a strong interest in government affairs, the role of faith-based advocacy, and event planning.  Prior knowledge of refugee, asylum and immigrant issues a plus, but more important is the desire to learn about such issues.  An interest in working in the Jewish community is also a plus. The candidate must have a professional demeanor, possess strong writing and research skills, and be able to work independently on a wide variety of administrative as well as policy-oriented tasks.   Someone with a flexible schedule who could stay after work for meetings and events 2-3 times a month would be preferred.

Young Leaders Intern
HIAS is America’s oldest international migration and refugee resettlement agency. Dedicated to assisting persecuted and oppressed people worldwide and delivering them to safe havens, HIAS has helped more than 4.5 million people in its 125 years of existence.

Through a combination of educational, fundraising, advocacy and service initiatives and events, HIAS’ Young Leaders (HYL) - a group of dedicated Jewish young professionals and students in their 20s and 30s - generate new and creative ways to help the organization continue its longstanding mission of rescue, resettlement and reunification, while bringing a new generation into the HIAS family.

HIAS seeks a student to work 15 hours per week during the spring semester.

The internship will focus on the following areas:
1) Be responsible for designing and managing an archival system and presentation materials from HIAS Young Leaders past documents and photos.

2) Work with Young Leaders Coordinator to research and create more comprehensive publicity methods and resources for HIAS Young Leaders events and initiatives.

3) Assist in ongoing facilitation of HIAS Young Leaders Community Service Projects including, but not limited to:
a) Refugee Enrichment Program that serves refugees en route to the U.S.
b) Programs to serve the NY local émigré community

4) Assist in planning and implementation of Young Leadership events including, but not limited to:
            a) Benefit Parties
            b) Educational Events
            b) Advocacy Mission to Washington DC

5) The Young Leadership intern will also assist in the following areas as needed:
           a) Outreach phone calls, emails, mailings
           b) Research
           c) Database upkeep
           d) General administrative support

QUALIFICATIONS: proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet; strong research and writing skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills; willingness to learn; background working with immigrants/other cultures desirable; proficiency in one or more of the following languages a plus: Russian, Spanish, Farsi; experience in designing printed materials are helpful, but not required; a flexible schedule allowing for after-hours meetings is beneficial.

CREDIT: If possible, credit will be provided.

SUPERVISION: Intern will work closely with Young Leaders Coordinator.
